Journalists at risk around the globe

A new report by the UK-based human rights NGO Article 19 shows that media freedom and the safety of journalists is under attack globally.

In 2017, 78 journalists and 312 rights defenders were killed, and 326 journalists were imprisoned. And incredibly, 90% of violence against journalists went unpunished.

Article 19’s executive director Thomas Hughes said: “Our data shows that freedom of expression has been in decline for ten years and that this demise has accelerated significantly in the last three years.”

Donald Trump’s demonization of the media is widely considered to be emboldening strongmen politicians and their followers around the world in violence against journalists.
