WELCOME TO LAST WEEK UNDER THE RADAR. I’M ZOE LICATA.

AN MIT STUDY PUBLISHED IN SCIENCE MAGAZINE THIS PAST WEEK SHOWED THAT FAKE NEWS SPREADS MUCH “FARTHER, FASTER, DEEPER, AND MORE BROADLY THAN THE TRUTH IN ALL CATEGORIES OF INFORMATION.” GIVEN THIS, MANY ARE CONCERNED AT THE FACT THAT THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION HAS NOT YET DIRECTED THE FBI TO SECURE THE U.S. ELECTORAL SYSTEM AGAINST RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE FOR THE NOVEMBER MIDTERM ELECTIONS. IN FACT, OF THE $40 MILLION APPROVED BY THE CONGRESS FOR THAT EXPRESS PURPOSE, THE ADMINISTRATION HAS SPENT EXACTLY ZERO CENTS.

AND WITH ALL THE POLITICAL TO-ING AND FRO-ING IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, NO ONE’S PAYING MUCH ATTENTION TO THE POLITICAL CRISIS UNFOLDING IN ETHIOPIA. WITH WIDESPREAD LAND SEIZURES, LACK OF JOBS, PROTESTS, AND CLASHES WITH POLICE, A STATE OF EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED THERE LAST MONTH – WIDELY CONDEMNED BY ETHIOPIA’S WESTERN ALLIES, WHO SAY IT UNDERMINES STEPS TOWARD DEMOCRATIC REFORMS. THE TURMOIL IN ETHIOPIA COMES AT A BAD TIME, GIVEN THE DIFFICULTIES IN WAR-TORN SOUTH SUDAN AND SOMALIA. IF ETHIOPIA COLLAPSES, IT IS EXPECTED THAT SO WILL THE REGION’S ECONOMY.

STUDENT SURVIVORS OF THE PARKLAND, FLORIDA SCHOOL SHOOTING LAST MONTH HAVE BEEN GETTING TRACTION ON THEIR EFFORTS TO PUSH U.S. POLICYMAKERS TOWARD SENSIBLE GUN CONTROL LAWS. ON MARCH 7TH, THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE FINALLY ENACTED A GUN CONTROL AND SCHOOL SAFETY BILL. THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION, HOWEVER, IS NOT TAKING IT SITTING DOWN. JUST HOURS AFTER FLORIDA GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT SIGNED THE BILL INTO LAW, THE NRA SUED THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO BLOCK THE BILL.

AND FINALLY, THE US CONGRESS HAS BEEN QUIETLY TRYING TO LET THE CREDIT REPORTING FIRM OF EQUIFAX OFF THE HOOK FOR HAVING EXPOSED THE PRIVATE INFORMATION OF HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF AMERICANS LAST YEAR IN ONE OF THE LARGEST CYBER SECURITY FAILURES IN HISTORY. LAST OCTOBER, THE CONGRESS EVEN VOTED TO STRIKE A CONSUMER FINANCIAL PROTECTION RULE THAT WOULD HAVE ALLOWED CONSUMERS AFFECTED BY THE HISTORIC EQUIFAX BREACH TO JOIN CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS. NOT TO WORRY. AS WE’VE SEEN INCREASINGLY OVER THE LAST YEAR,  WHEN CONGRESS IS ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL – OFTEN BECAUSE OF THEIR OWN CONFLICTS OF INTEREST – STATES’ ATTORNEYS GENERAL JUMP INTO THE DRIVER’S SEAT. THERE IS NOW A 50- STATE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST EQUIFAX MAKING ITS WAY THROUGH THE COURT SYSTEM. AND THAT’S IN ADDITION TO THE MORE THAN 240 SEPARATE CLASS-ACTION LAWSUITS, A FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION INVESTIGATION, AND MORE THAN 60 GOVERNMENT INVESTIGATIONS FROM U.S. STATE ATTORNEYS GENERAL, FEDERAL AGENCIES AND THE BRITISH AND CANADIAN GOVERNMENTS.  WE SAY: GOOD.
